Trying to predict future developments in technology has been an amusing attraction for decades, from Disneyland’s House of the Future in the 1950s to present-day tech moguls trying to develop the next big thing. At Lucid, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of technology, so our team got together to find the most interesting technological advancements that we have read about recently, and thought about how we could incorporate them into our outsourced IT provision one day. Read on to find out which development you think would be the most interesting for your industry!
Smell Your Screen: Aromas in Gaming
A recent BBC News article explained developments in introducing scents to gaming experiences, via wearable headsets that can disperse scent molecules as a gamer interacts with the screen. For example, during a racing game, scents like petrol and rubber can be released for immersive purposes. It may be many years away, but we think that this technology has some serious potential for advertising purposes — such as being able to smell the delicious food on your TV screen, or curate a specific scent profile to entice customers to choose your product. Just
imagine it…. we can picture receiving IT tickets because your document smells like something completely random, or your scent-releasing hardware needs an update. The Lucid team of the future will be happy to help, as ever!
AI Writes a Book (As You!)
The use of AI in long-form writing has been both contentious and experimental in recent years, particularly because the technology often researches online information to learn and adapt. The use of consumer AI to create giftable novels written in the voice of the recipient is one such example, and whilst it might make a hilarious present for a loved one, it does have implications for industries like copywriting and publishing. AI is a powerful and exciting tool and is already being immersed in plenty of everyday tasks, but it will certainly require careful regulation and research to ensure that it continues to fulfil its potential. Thankfully, the Lucid team are confident that there will always be a need for experienced humans to fix your technology (just look at these famous AI fails to see why we are not worried about being replaced!).
Social Media: Fact Checkers or Community Notes?
Social media platforms like X, Facebook and Instagram are increasingly rejecting the use of independent fact checkers to combat misinformation, instead relying on a Community Notes style of modification. This essentially means that the users of each platform, rather than experts, are able to add corrections and clarifications to posts. Shifting from the professional sphere to the personal sphere to ensure accuracy is an interesting trend in communication technology, and one that we may start to see in other areas of information sharing. If you need an answer to an IT-related problem, however, we recommend skipping the social media and getting in touch with the Lucid team directly.
