Learn with Lucid: TfL Hacks and Information Security

In our ongoing Learn with Lucid series, our team are looking at news and current affairs in the technology sector to provide you with an expert perspective. In our April edition, we are reflecting on what we can learn from a recent BBC News article about the 2024 TfL hack.

The Story: Mass-Scale Hacking

In 2024, Transport for London (TfL) reported a data breach after hackers downloaded a database containing customer information. In March 2026, the BBC reported that the breach — which TfL had described as impacting “some” customers — actually included the stolen data of around 10 million people. TfL continues to insist that it has “kept customers informed throughout this incident and will continue to take all necessary action”, but what does this mean for those affected?

Are Mass Data Breaches a Fact of Modern Life?

Hacks and data breaches seem to be in the headlines constantly — in recent years, prominent cases have included M&S, Jaguar Land Rover, and Co-op. Whilst large companies have a legal responsibility to protect your data, there are also small steps that individuals can take to prioritise cybersecurity in their own lives. If you are informed that your data has been part of a breach, take the appropriate action recommended (this might include changing your password, or being vigilant against malicious emails). You should always ensure that you are using strong passwords, and avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.
